Evaluation -Question 7 :)

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

- In the Preliminary task we forgot to check if the mic was on and so after filming all our footage and came back to watch over, there wasn't any sound and so we had to re-do it all.

- When we came to filming for the real task we kept checking the mic to make sure it was working. We tested it before we filmed to make sure the sound was alright.

- In the preliminary task we used match on action (walk through door)
- In the real task we used this in parts of our opening sequence.

- In the preliminary we used shot reverse shot for the first time.
- In the real task, we used this technique during the conversation between Nicky and Ryan

-In the preliminary we had to move audio and sync it back into place.
-In the real task we used this when inputting the sound/audio track over the scene where Nicky starts miming to the song.

- In the preliminary task we had a two shot when Charlotte and Nicky are talking.
- We used this in the real task when Nicky and her little sister had a conversation.

-Finally, in the preliminary we used an establishing shot to open the scene.

-In the real task, we didn't use an establishing shot as we felt straight to then action would attract the audience.

Evaluation -Question 6 :)

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

- The programs we used on the mac were: iMovie, Soundtrack Pro, Final cut Pro, and Photoshop. The things we learnt during the making of our opening sequence was inserting titles into Final cut Pro, how to make effective logos (for our studio and production name) and to add music/sound effects to our footage. Finally, we learnt how to insert transitions into the sequence.

- We also learnt not to rely on technology too much as it can go faulty, we lost out footage once due to the computer loosing the data.

- Our experience with the programmes were limited and so we weren't able to create our ideas the way we would have liked them.

Evaluation -Question 5 :)

5. How did you attract/ address your audience?

- We made the character a relation to the target audience.
- Used humor and romance to entice a wide audience.
- Having an enigma on the realtionship, 'Will they get together/won't they?'

Feedback for rough-cut.
"Need to add audio and balance it out."
RESPONSE
-added audio for final cut, rough cut was just to get scenes in order.

"Some scenes were confussing".
RESPONSE
-cut the scenes that weren't needed or crucial to the story.

"Some good continuity with editing".
RESPONSE
-although it work we refined the transitions for final cut.

Feedback from final-cut.
"Really liked the studio and production titles".
RESPONSE
-we thought our studio and production titles were better animated compared to out old still image logo's.

"Audio goes too loud and cracks when the main character is dancing".
RESPONSE
-we tried to make the audio appear diagetic and thought the loudness would indicate how teenagers are always blasting their music in their rooms. Almost the audience experiences what the family would experience.

"Audio seems unbalanced at times".
RESPONSE
-unfortunately, our footage had some people behind camera talking or other distracting sounds so we had to cut them. I would have liked to have found an audio track which had 'house like sounds' but none were found.

"Not sure why you chose to use Taylor Swift - you belong with me".
RESPONSE
-Taylor Swift has touched the hearts of many young teenagers as her songs are all about finding and loosing love. We thought this fits perfectly with our film.

"Got a good impression of what the film will be about me".
RESPONSE
-this is good as we used as much conventions as we could to make it clear what genre it was.

Social networking sites!

Evaluation -Question 4 :)

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Certificate

- 12A. Why? We feel its the appropriate age group for a young/teenage romantic comedy. Our film doesn't include any swearing, violence or sexual content, and the main characters are around the same age as our target audience (around 10-18).

- At this age meaningful relationships are starting to appear.

- Although 12A it would also be a good 'family film'.

Evaluation -Question 3 :)

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media and why?

Film Company

- Paramount Pictures
- Why? They distribute similar films to our film, such as 'Mean Girls' and 'Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging'. These films relate well as they both
involve a love story and has a humorous story line.
The film genre (rom-com) is popular so we think it would generate a lot of profit as the company is one of the main studio names to distribute films.

Evaluation - Question 2 :)

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Gender representations.
Nicky

Nicky is a typical teenager girl.
- self conscious.
- likes having fun.
- takes time on appearance.
- interested in boys.
- quite feeble.
- sensitive.
- rebelious.
Ryan

Ryan is a typical teenage boy.
- seen throwing tomato up and down (cool)
- sarcastic tone used (not upfront with feelings)
- carrying heavy boxes (strong)
- doesn't care too much for girls.
- rebelious.
Age representations.
Nicky and Ryan are both portrayed with a childish, foolish nature.
They are typical young teenagers as they care alot for their reputation and their appearances.

The younger sister is portrayed as a pest to the main character. You can see that Nicky is more dominate over the younger character.
Younger siblings can always come back with revenge though, Getting Nicky into trouble by throwing the tomato at the boy she is interested in.

Evaluation - Question 1 :)

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Enigmatic narrative.
- Questions their relationship 'Will they end up together?' 'How will they end up together?'
- We left the ending of our opening sequence on a cliff hanger - not knowing what will happen.

Conventions
- Humor, Romance, Childish, Identity, Drama.

- We've shown the conventions by:
The main character singing and dancing to a song.
Using a tomatoe as pay-back.
Stereotypical
The relationship between Nicky and Ryan.
For a typical romantic comedy the love story progresses from a hatred between the two characters. This relationship gets turned around and they end up together in the end.
Opening Titles
We looked at conventions of opening titles.
- Typography reflects genre.
- Audio track reflects genre.
- Indroduction of characters.
- Studio/Production logo's.
- Text placement. (Over footage, After footage, In between action)
Openings We Got Inspiration From

Re-uploading :)

After sorting out our opening, we re-uploaded it to youtube. Everything is now working and after watching it through we can see that it has turned out how we imagined.

Response From Target Audience :)

After getting a member of our target audience to watch our opening, this is what they had to say:
"Very good".
"I can relate to the main character".
"I found the tomatoe funny and it fits".
"I like the song".

"I wanted to see more".
"Some parts hard to understand".
"Music goes a bit too loud".

Technical Difficulties :)

So we uploaded our final version onto the blog and onto youtube. When played them back and they were not as we wanted themto appear. The youtube version is missing part of the audio and so we will export our opening again and double check it works. After this we will re-upload to youtube and make sure it's how we want it.

One main problem with film making is the technology-It can mess up. Doing media means relying on computers and technology alot and this is the main area where problems occur.

Through this project we have had a mix of problems but we have still managed to make a finalized opening sequence. Hopefully the next time we upload it will be the last time we upload.

Final version :)

11th March :)

Today we finished editing our final opening titles for our film 'He hates me, he hates me not'. We added the titles to our sequence (in which we used the font Jennifers Handwriting) and we imported the song 'You belong with me' by Taylor Swift. We used 'Soundtrack Pro' for all our sound. We had some trouble exporting the video which wasted some time but eventually we figured it out and we were back on track. We finally pieced it together.

Thursday, 4 March 2010

Rough cut :)

After importing our footage we began to make a rough-cut. This is so we know how it will look pieced together. From this we can also get feedback from audiences and see if it makes sense.

Studio Logo And Production Logo :)

We added in the sound of an old film reel running. We also added the 'old film' video effect to make it reflect more on the sound.

We decided we wanted a 'sparkley' sound to go over our animated title. We thought that a sparkle would give the effect of a diamond glicening in the sunlight. After finding the sound we wanted we croped it down and faded it out so it blended into the next clip, without the audience noticing the change too much.

Production Logo :)

For the Production logo we will be using the same production name 'Diamond Productions'. We animated the logo to have the writing sparkling and a refection light from the diamond. We made this logo by using Photoshop and iMovie. This has been improved from our last logo as we've added different effects.

In this screen grab you can see the mid-effect of our animated production title.

The animated title completed - without sound

We will add sound at a later date

Studio Logo :)

We decided to animate our studio logo. We are using the same studio as before but we are going to change the image so we can animate it. We would like to include this as an evolution of our studio logo as it has improved from the previous image. We made the animated logo using Photoshop (to make the actual image) and then iMovie to animate it.

The print screen shows the effect we used and the final shot of the animation using iMovie.

The Animation Completed - Without Sound.

We'll add in sound at a later date.

Filming :)

Thursday, Febuary 18th we go to location, with our actors ready we begin filming. We managed to get it all done in the day, and had a successful shoot.

We got some photographs from the filming:

Animatic :)

Here is the animatic that we made for our film, He hates me, He hates me not!
We took photographs of each scene of the storyboard and pieced them together. After making the silent animatic we added the music. We used Taylor Swift - You belong with me to suggest what the relationship between the two main characters will be. We then added the voice overs which took a while because of disruptions from the class. We used a female voice for Ryan because we had no male to read the part but for the filming we will use a boy.
The animatic has given us an idea of what our opening will look like once completed.

2nd of Feb :)

  • On Tuesday we uploaded our storyboard onto our blog, uploaded photos of possible locations we will use for our opening sequence, and finished our prop list.
  • We also discussed what music to use for our sequence, and when would be best to start filming.

Tuesday, 2 February 2010

Props :)

Tomato - This prop is the key that brings the two main characters together and creates the relationship. It is probably the main prop as without it the characters might not have met in the same way. This prop is used when Nicky's sister throws it out the window and hits Ryan. Ryan then thinks Nicky is the one that threw the tomato, therefore making him hate her.

Teddy Bear - A teddy bear is throw at Nicky's sister
when she is telling her to keep the noise down. This
prop is important as it is the reason why Karen (Nicky's sister) gets the tomato to get revenge for being an annoying sister.

Stereo- We use the stereo to play the diegetic sounds of a radio. The song playing in the background will be 'Taylor swift - You belong with me'. The main character Nicky sings and dances to this as it plays. The young teenage audience can relate to this type of morning behaviour.
When Nicky singing and dancing she will be using another prop.
-A hair brush, as we all know you can't be an imaginary popstar without one.

For mise en scene we are going to be using bedroom items such as make-up and hair products.
We will also need boxes for the guy 'Ryan' moving in.

Storyboard :)

Location Scouting :)

We have already decided that the perfect location should be a teenage girls bedroom. Here are some possible ideas for rooms which we feel would be perfect for our film.

1.
We decided not to use this location as it seemed too young for our character. The room is also too small and the window looks out upon the back garden.
2 This room is a good location: big room, large mirror and a window that leads to the front of the house. We unfortunatley couldn't use this bedroom however due to lack of furniture.

3 This was another room we thought about using, but because of the window and the surroundings outside, we decided against using it.

Inspiration :)

Opening titles that have inspired our idea for our film.

Adventures in babysitting was directed by the same director that we are using for our film.

We liked the idea of having the main character singing and dancing in their bedroom
as all young teenagers can relate to this.

Angus, thongs and perfect snogging.
We liked how the character was portrayed in this opening and thought it could
enhance our own characters.

It's a boy girl thing.
We liked how the difference between the two characters was shown.
We also liked the relationship between the two main characters and
took inspiration from this when considering
how to introduce the relationship between our two main characters.

Director :)

After doing some research I found that Chris Columbus produced, wrote and directed what could be called as teen films. His works include that of 'The Goonies', 'Adventures in babysitting', 'Home Alone' and 'Harry Potter'.

Our film is a teen romantic comedy and thats why using a director who won a British comedy award would make the film appeal to a wider audience.

Chris columbus' films are widely known by all ages. This will increase the audience as they know he has made good, enjoyable, family films in the past.
